Adguard causing phone reboot on Android 10

I don't have this problem with any other VPN. I'm using nordvpn all day, no reboots. Only had the issue with adguard installed. Uninstalled it two weeks ago and it hasn't rebooted since
Decided to try out Blokada just to test this "happens with all VPN" theory. Its been working fine, zero reboots so far in two days. I will of course update if it does. Very disappointed that my preferred adblocker (adguard) that i have a lifetime subscription to, had been almost useless to me for months now.

Well, I guess to make sure it's true, I'm gonna have to ask you to gather a full log.
For this purpose it is necessary:

- AdGuard > Settings > Advanced > Logging Level > Record All.
- Catch reboot.
- Note the time the error occurred and let us know.
- Don't forget to return to the default logging level.
- Logs can be sent to me at PM or on devteam@adguard.com
- Also, you need to Collect Android Bug Report

Thank you in advance for the information provided.

Same. Have been using blokada for a few days now. No reboots. I miss adguard though :(

I'll see if I can get the logs you need. This is also happening to me on my Pixel 3 XL running stock Android 10. I get a reboot about every other day. No specific app, routine, or anything I can narrow it down to. I only came here after I searched the issue, and found it's being caused by AdGuard.

Don't AdGuard app developers have an Android 10 phone to try out themselves?

This rebooting is happening wide spread across devices.

Please try to fix it.

I have installed Blockada on my wife and daughter phones though. Thank you for the recommendation.

As it was spoken before, this is an Android issue. Google will implement the solution in the nearest update (I hope). We've tested a lot of devices with Android 10 on board, it is happening from time to time and all VPN applications are affected. Please, stand by for the update.

1) If it's Android 10, then there isn't any need to submit logs again.
2) I thought someone mentioned no issue with other apps VPN in 10?
3) Is Google aware about this problem?

I tried to Google around for "Android 10 VPN rebooting".

Not much news except for AdGuard. :(

I hope this is not game over for Android AdGuard.

In my environment, including me, are six pixel phones available.

Five (1x P2, 1x P2XL, 1x P3a, 2x P3) are with Adgaurd and all have since Android 10 soft / hard reboots.
One (P2XL) is without Adguard and has no reboots.

The reboots usually happen once a day or once in 2-3 days.

Has anyone tried Adguard beta/nightly version, possibly it solves the problem?

Nightly made zero difference on a pixel 3. I would say i had reboots at least daily. The final straw was on a trip, in unfamiliar territory, while using google maps via Android Auto. Unacceptable.

... that is annoying.
I'm wondering if other (not Pixel) smartphones are infected with android 10 of them?

That is horrible. Mine rebooted during a call with a job recruiter. Good thing just a recruiter, not actual employer at least!

The fact is that this is not an AdGuard issue and unfortunately we cannot solve it on our side. All we have to do is wait for a fix from Google.

Ill say this, and then silently wait on this fix.

I love Adguard. Literally millions of ads blocked with zero problems. Tens of gigabytes worth of saved data. But believe me when i tell you that using another ad blocker on the same phone, with all the same annoying ads being blocked in various apps and browsers...zero unexpected re-boots.

I have no agenda and will eagerly anticipate Android's fix but i highly suspect this is an Adguard problem more than an Android problem. I look forward to being hopefully proven wrong!

But if it's because of the Android bug, how can it be then that I could work around the issue on my Pixel 3a by disabling "Filtering in all apps"?

The Adguard VPN was running over weeks without rebooting after disabling this, thus filtering ads only in browsers.
If it's due to this VPN bug, I would expect it to crash even if there is no filtering enabled at all. When only the filtering is disabled, app traffic is still routed through the VPN.

For me, the relation of soft reboots to filtering in all apps sounds more like Adguard blocking something from Android OS which it doesn't like and thus crashes after some time.

This is not fixed, just delayed.

Guys, this is a confirmed bug by the Android team. The fix was already merged into the Android code, and the only question is when Google finally decides to ship it to users.

How about other VPN issues with 10?
All VPN apps that use this method (getConnectionOwnerUid) are affected.
Not all apps use it, but this API is crucial to AdGuard because it allows us to detect what app tries to establish a connection.

Thank you for the info. From reading around the fix should come to Pixel phones in the December update.
