AdGuard + External VPN = No connection

I am using AdGuard for Windows and sometimes I want to connect to a VPN server. My VPN client is VPNSecure.

Every time I enable my VPN client and connect to some server, internet connection gets entirely blocked. The only way to utilize a VPN connection is by first disabling AdGuard.

How can I run simultaneously AdGuard and another VPN client? What configuration should I change in AdGuard to allow the VPN traffic?

If you are using DNS feature of Adguard try disabling it.

I had same problem and that worked for me.

@AlwaysAngry That did the trick indeed. Now I feel lazy that I did not find that myself through a bit of trial and error!

I'm curious however to understand how DNS affects the VPN traffic, in a more granular sense.

Wishing someone from the AdGuard team could chip in and let us know if and how this could be overcome, in order to have both settings enabled.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

If you can't disable DNS setting then you have to switch vpn client and then test. After that if you will face same issue then you should contact with AdGuard support directly. Because, I already used AdGuard with 3rd party VPN client like PureVPN but I did not face this type of issue.

@billjcarlos Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, even if it's the case of VPNSecure being the culprit in this issue, it's difficult for me to change VPN client as it's the only one that I have a (lifetime) paid subscription on. So I'm stuck with that one, at least until I find a proper sale on some other dependable VPN solution.

You can get a good deal on PureVPN as well for 5 years with 86% off. It has more than 6500 servers in over 140 countries which is a good sign of reliable vpn. You can see here. https://www.purevpn.com/vpn-deals

The free version of AdGuard VPN is purposely speed limited (I think to something like 20 Mbps or something, can't remember the exact limit) and it's limited to only 3GB a month. So what you're seeing when using the free version of AdGuard VPN is actually normal.

I have the same thing when I use CyberghostVPN (WireGuard protocol). I have disabled DNS in Adguard settings and it works. CyberghostVPN cannot disable their DNS, and perhaps that is a problem.

@SKIBA So, there's two of us now.

Since VPNSecure and CyberghostVPN both seem to have issues with AdGuard DNS, I think the problem cannot be solved just by "looking into some other VPN client". There might be more clients that AdGuard DNS doesn't play well with, so I think this is worth investigating from AdGuard's side.

I reckon that in theory you can use both Adguard and VPN at the same time. Why not, because Adguard blocks ads in general for your entire operating system.

Yes. AdGuard can be used with VPN and it works really well, but you can´t use the "DNS Protection" feature.

I'm using AdGuard with DNS protection, together with Hotspot Shield VPN no problem. As far as I know, Hotspot Shield routes DNS traffic through Google DNS, encrypted. So I feel it may be an inoptimized design by the VPN, not AdGuard's fault. By the way, you can find plenty of lifetime VPN deal on StackSocial. VPNSecure is known for cheap, but not exactly well-known for service.

I reckon that in theory you can use both Adguard and VPN at the same time. Why not, because Adguard blocks ads in general for your entire operating system, and for example, the VPN-om that I currently use blocks windows flashing and ads specifically for netflix content and gives an extensive list of media files. In general, there are different VPNs on netflix-vpn.com specifically to this topic. The service provides several options, so you can download and customize it for yourself. Although, in fact, Adguard should also work on netflix, but it does not open inaccessible movies, as on that service with VPN.

You can use both Adguard and VPN at the same time. Adguard just blocks ads in general for your system.
You can also try replacing the VPN service. https://en.vpnwelt.com/best-vpn/
Try to install the free version first, and if there are no conflicts in the system, then choose the full-price service))
good luck
