In the most recent release of Adguard I have begun getting notifications that adguard encountered a critical error and had to restart. The VPN has been restarted which is good, but the notification happens once an hour or so. I have sent several bug reports with logs. Has anyone else encountered this?

Yes, this problem is known to developers. You can actually find respective task in our bug tracker: https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardForAndroid/issues/24
It should be fixed with the next release.
