Does wildcard or regex works on second level domain?

Also I can't find a way to do it.

example*.com not works.
example/.*/.com not works too.

First one should work, but is more dangerous as it blocks any character after ad.

does regex and wildcard always need "$empty"?
without it, none of syntax works.

Without it they work (just not for the html page itself, scripts, etc. are blocked on that url) and the page looks strangely.

On iOS they are not required due to the nature of their API.
