I thought Adguard was free

I recently installed Adguard DNS on my windows pc and now I get a popup that asks me to start a free trial or purchase a license. If you try to exit the screen, it turns Adguard DNS off. I thought Adguard was supposed to be "always free?" What gives here? Seems a little funky for a program that promotes ad blocking to splash page you with one of their own within minutes of setting it up.

AdGuard DNS, AdGuard Home, AdGuard for Safari, the AdGuard Adblocker browser extensions are free (and even open-source), yes. However the standalone apps; AdGuard for Windows, AdGuard for Mac and AdGuard for Android (when filtering other apps besides web browsers) are not.

It sounds like you're using AdGuard for Windows, which isn't free.

There’s an AdGuard browser extension which is free. Perhaps you were thinking of this.

Okay. When I searched for how to setup Adguard DNS, there was a download button on the page that apparently was Adguard for Windows and not DNS which it appeared as so. I see this error, but it is not very clear on the website, either.
