Packet loss???

I know this sounds stupid w/ Adguard being a browser extension or what have you, but has anyone experienced packet loss and/or slow upload speeds since it was installed? My uploads have been cut in half, and now two different network tests are showing packet losses of 1-3%. Bought a new modem, ethernet cables, etc. Hardwired right from the modem and same results.

Adguard for Mac isn't a browser extension, unlike the Adguard Adblocker browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc. Which are you using? I'll assume for this post you're using Adguard for Mac.

I've never noticed any issues with download/upload speeds, but then again my Internet isn't too fast. But this isn't the first time users have mentioned such issues.

Have you done speed tests with and without Adguard for Mac?

P.S. If you're using one of the Adguard Adblocker browser extensions, those should not have any effect on download/upload speeds, or cause packet loss.

I'm not using the browser extension, it's the one you pay for. I'm one of those tech savvy guys who tests his network on a regular basis. I use a 2013 Apple Time capsule as a router and a Netgear CM500 modem, w/ Cox ultimate. My tests between Cox's internal speedtest, speedtest.net, and the Xbox One's network test have consistently been about 230-235 down, 30-35 up. They've always been within less than 5% of each other. Suddenly on 2/17/17, I noticed my downloads were slightly lower(around 200 down) and my uploads were cut in half(15 up). I ran all 3 speed tests(Xbox One-hard wired, speedtest.net, and Cox's internal speedtest). All 3 had the same poor results. The Xbox One showed 1-3% packet loss, which has NEVER happened before(again, I use all 3 speed tests on a regular basis, no previous problems). Pingtest.net has also been showing packet losses of 1-3%. I use that site ALL the time, never had packet loss before 2/17/17. Cox tech came out, determined it was the router, because he said hard-wired from the modem to his laptop, things were fine. Tech leaves, I hard wire the modem directly to the Xbox One, 95 down, 3 up, 3% packet loss-no router involved. I hard-wire my Macbook laptop directly to the modem. Uploads are STILL half of what they should be thru speedtest.net and Cox's internal speedtest. Pingtest.net still show 1-3% packet loss. I buy a new modem(TP LINK TC-7620). Cox Rep on phone says IMMEDIATELY showing packet loss, signals all over the place. Hard wired laptop from new modem-no router involved, still showing 1-3% packet loss at pingtest.net, slow uploads(roughly half). Hard wired Xbox One directly to new modem, packet loss is 1-3%, uploads are still 2-3mbps up. All tested w/ new ethernet cables from the new modem. There are no splitters between the coax cable from the wall and my modem, except for the connector from where it actually enters the the wall. Cox tech is coming again, between 3-5 pm Phoenix time.

In desperation Today, I tried disabling Adguard for Mac, and guess what? For the last several hours, uploads have come back, and packet loss has disappeared on both network tests. This is of course w/ the new modem and ethernet cable having been in for a few hours. But remember, I had those hooked up a few hours earlier, still slow uploads/packet loss.

@anonymousaz the only thing I don't understand is how Adguard installed on your Mac can affect the packet loss and connection speed of your Xbox One if it's hardwired to the modem? Do you use Adguard on Mac as proxy?

I thought it was maybe messing with my connection, which explains the Xbox and my laptop w/ slow uploads/packet loss, because they're on the network. Right after I installed it I started having problems, right after I deleted it, problems cleared up. I though maybe it was messing w/ my DNS or something. Who knows. I'll reinstall it later and see if it pops up again.

@anonymousaz Adguard for Mac doesn't mess with DNS and can't affect your Xbox traffic unless you use Adguard as a proxy.

What if you install Adguard again, but disable the protection? Will packets still be lost (both on Mac and Xbox)?

@anonymousaz I just can't imagine any realistic explanation how Adguard installed on your Mac can possibly affect your Xbox traffic in any way. At the same time, I can't dismiss the issue as the consequences of the problem are very serious.

What if you try to disable various options in Adguard and check if any of them affect the situation? Like disabling HTTPS, disabling all filters, etc. (all while leaving the protection up).
